Description
Our organization is a very unique veteran’s organization that deals with spinal cord injuries and spinal cord disease.
In the last twenty years we have increased the awareness and need for accessibility through partnerships with Oregon Parks and Recreation, Oregon Fish and Wildlife to make accessible camping sites and fishing platforms. We also partner with corporations to increase accessibility in the work place, sporting events and other ventures. We were the original writers of the first accessible building code and trained building officials on accessibility. We have also worked with the healthcare industry on new technologies available and provide educational opportunities on health issues as it pertains to spinal cord injuries and spinal cord disease. The most important aspect of our organization is that everything we do to ensure our members have the quality of life they desire also benefits everyone who has a disability.
In the last two decades we have raised over $5,000,000 for research that is focused on alleviating the effects of and finding a cure for spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) as well as educating individuals, communities and local government agencies on (SCI/D) knowledge and help improve the lives of those with SCI/D.
Currently, more than 30 people a day become paralyzed from spinal cord injury (SCI) or disease. This translates into nearly 11,000 new injuries every year. In the United States today, approximately 450,000 people live with spinal cord injury. The statistical information is from the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center at the University of Alabama. In addition, since 2003 there has been 126 SCI combat injured Iraq veterans who have returned home.
