    Description

AIR,formerly known as Disabled Citizens Recreation, this program was started in 1964, and is considered one of the top specialized community recreation programs in the United States. The AIR program serves people of all ages and types of special needs at sites throughout the city, including Portland Parks & Recreation's community centers and community schools. Participants need not live in Portland to participate in AIR programs; however, non-Portland residents pay a slightly higher fee.

    Inclusion Services

The Portland Parks & Recreation Inclusion Program provides a wide range of recreational opportunities for anyone who has a disability or special need, no matter what age. Equal opportunities are provided for people with and without disabilities to take part in classes and activities through PP&R in the most inclusive setting. The inclusion process consists of an informational interview and a planning session where the Inclusion Specialist can assist in choosing an appropriate activity for the individual. The Inclusion staff will then assist an individual on site at the first class of the chosen program. After the initial class it will be determined if the individual needs further assistance. Contact the Inclusion Specialist at 503-823-4328.

    Therapeutic Recreation Internships

College students studying therapeutic recreation can apply to do their internship with Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation. Internship assignments include planning, assisting, and evaluating AIR programs - and maintaining program and participant documentation. Interns assist with special interest classes, community field trips, dances, and bowling. Portland Parks & Recreation will coordinate the particulars of each internship to meet student and university needs. The AIR program director is a full-time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. A small stipend is available; housing is not provided. For more information, call 503-823-4328.
